Kansas Customers

After doing my bi-annual tax check across the country I recently found out that Kansas is the only state in the union refusing nexus style regulations!

What!?!?
I know, it’s crazy, but any items sold in or shipped to Kansas require a sales license and payment of state sales taxes even if it is only $.10. WOW!

For perspective, all other states in the union have “nexus” laws which help determine which businesses are required to pay sales taxes and which aren’t. Simply put if you are a tiny online crafter like myself you aren’t considered large enough to warrant adherence to the local sales tax laws. For example, most states consider $100,000 to $200,000 in annual sales or 200 transactions annually enough to qualify for a nexus status significant enough to require licensing and the payment of sales taxes.

So I find myself in a bit of a pickle, but I think I’ve found a solution at least for now. Unfortunately I really don’t have the resources to keep up with multiple licensing and tax laws for multiple states.  Colorado laws are complicated enough with all of our home rule cities and special districts and such. So here is my plan. 🙂

All Kansas buyers will need to buy through my Etsy Store (https://www.etsy.com/shop/RosaryStuff) instead of this store. Etsy has the resources to charge and pay the appropriate taxes for all of my Kansas customers. 🙂  Keep in mind, you can still choose from any of the items in either of my stores (etsy or this one), but the final purchase must go through Etsy.  Whether you need rosary parts, a custom rosary, or something else, just contact me with what you need and I will create a special Etsy listing for you. 🙂  You don’t have to be a member of Etsy to shop there, so if you have any questions or need help please don’t hesitate to contact me. 🙂

Colorado Sales Tax News!

Woo Hoo!!

I just got off the phone with the State of Colorado and found out there has been a change to the exemption for small businesses in Colorado.  I can now charge origin taxes instead of destination taxes!! Woo Hoo!!!

I’m not sure when this changed happened but honestly it may have been a while ago. I fear the information I received from the rep I spoke with originally may have been incorrect.

Anyway, this means that at least for now, all Colorado customers regardless of location will pay the Westminster City/Jeffco sales tax of 8.35%.  This will continue until the new global information system is created.  The rep I spoke with said they had not heard when that would take effect, so until then, I am opening up the state of Colorado for shipping again!  YAY!!

Once the new system is up and running, then we can reevaluate to see if it is something that will work appropriately with our pesky home rule city policies.

Please give me time to update the system with the changes.  I’m hoping I can have it ready to go within the next day or two.  If you have any questions, please let me know. OK?

Take care and Happy New Year!!!!
